The simplification, modernization and harmonization of export and import processes have emerged as an important issue for the world trading system. To support and encourage ideal trade conditions around the world, World Trade Organization (WTO) proposed the landmark 'Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) that was entered into force on 22 February 2017. The TFA encompasses several provisions for ensuring expedited movement, release and clearance of goods and sets out measures for effective cooperation between customs, related authorities on trade facilitation and customs compliances. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) are also leveraging their strengths and services to provide a coordinated and integrated program to support developing countries in implementation of the WTO TFA and have even proposed a pentagonal framework in this regards which dictates the steps to achieve trade facilitation. The Indian government too has ratified the agreement and has commenced taking pertinent measures. In fact, it has already established a preparatory Committee on Trade Facilitation and is accepting Notifications of Category A commitments under the Agreement on Trade Facilitation.
With the support of government, allied stakeholders and world trade bodies, the Trade Facilitation initiatives have assumed key priority in the Indian Trade community.
